The varsity track team got an early jump on track season at the Lakeside Early Bird Invitational on Saturday, February 12. For this meet, the team only took the boys distance runners, competing in just 5 events. The boys opened their race season with a win in the 4x800 relay (Adam Lippe, Jacob Hanna, Eli Scott, Brad Joiner) shaving an incredible 40 seconds from the 2021 opening meet time and nearly 10 seconds off last season’s PR. In the individual events, Adam Lippe finished 2nd in the 1600, tying last season’s PR, while Christian Vitacco was 4th in the 1600 and just two seconds off last season’s PR. Eli Scott finished 3rd and Brooks Johnson 7th in the 3200. Eli eclipsed last season’s PR by 24 seconds! Brad Joiner was 4th in the 300 hurdles, just 1 second from last season’s PR. Brooks Johnson dropped more than 40 seconds from his 2021 opening meet 3200 time, while James King dropped 22 seconds from his 2021 opening meet 1600 time and is just 6 seconds from last year’s PR. Patrick Joiner made a successful transition from middle school 300 hurdles to varsity 300 hurdles and is just 2 seconds from last year’s PR despite the varsity hurdles being 6 inches taller than middle school hurdles. The full boys and girls team will compete in two weeks at the Augusta Eagles Invitational.
