Our Wildcat runners continue to excel!

Athletics News: Cross Country | Westminster

The middle school teams returned to their league meets this week with a five team race at Augusta Prep on Tuesday. The boys, led by Caleb Lambert (2nd) and Charlie Campbell (6th), were the overall meet winners, while the girls finished second. The girls were led by Emma Jordan (4th), Molly Bramhall (5th), and Kaylee Charles Finch (6th).

The Varsity runners made their second trip into the Palmetto State for the annual battle at Fox Creek. State pride is always on the line at this meet. This year the meet included 5 schools from Georgia and 10 from South Carolina. While the numbers seemed to favor our neighbors from across the river, the Wildcats brought home wins for both boys and girls last year and were looking to repeat this year.

The girls were running shorthanded due to injury and family commitments. Like the last trip across the Savannah in late August, 8th grader Kassidy Watson stepped in to fill the void. The girls, led by Abigail Knight (4th) and Claire Peacock (5th), placed second overall. Rachel Goodell (8th) and Hannah Case (13th) also finished in the top 15. Kassidy Watson did a great job filling in, shaving more than 2.5 minutes off her previous 5K PR and finishing 16th.

In the boys’ race, the Wildcats return Sophomore Adam Lippe who missed the past three meets due to a heel injury. He took advantage of the one race rehab assignment on the JV team to win the JV meet. The team looks forward to his return to varsity next week. James King (3rd) and William Westmoreland (9th) also finished in the top 10 in the JV race.

The boys’ varsity team took home a second consecutive win at Fox Creek in dramatic fashion. Brad Joiner used a lunge at the finish to take 3rd. Senior, Eli Scott finished 5th, while 8th grader, Lucas Johnson, dropped 20 seconds off his previous PR to take 6th leading the Wildcats to a two point win over the Augusta Eagles. Senior, Robert Voegtlen, Sophomore, James King, and Freshman, Patrick Joiner, also set PRs.

The next varsity meet is Saturday, October 9 at the State Preview meet in Macon, while the middle school teams run a day earlier, October 8, at EDS.
