Cross Country Update - Week 1
Cross Country is off to a great start!
The Wildcats opened the season at the Augusta Eagles Invitational in what has become the annual “kickoff” meet. The meet featured 17 varsity teams, including some of the CSRAs largest public schools. The varsity girls return 5 of their top 7 from last year’s state championship team and enter this season as the top ranked independent school in Georgia. With only 6 girls on this year’s team, everyone has to run well for the team to place well and the girls were up to the task with most running significantly faster times than last year’s opening meet. Led by Senior, Claire Peacock, the girls placed 2 in the top 20, finishing 5th overall.
Like the girls, the boys return 5 of the top 7 from the 2020 state champions, and enter the season as the top ranked independent school. Unfortunately, they were shorthanded in this race, with 4 of the top 8 sidelined for various reasons. The boys ran well with many posting faster times than last year’s opening meet. Like the girls, the boys placed 2 in the top 20, but with so many top runners missing, the team finished 7th out of 17 teams.
In the middle school race, 8th grader, Lucas Johnson, claimed the winner’s medal at the Eagles Invitational for the second year in a row, besting the second place finisher by nearly 30 seconds. The middle school boys were also running shorthanded with a couple of top runners at a soccer tournament. The team finished 4th out of 11 schools. In the middle school girls, 6th grade phenom, Emma Jordan, finished 2nd overall. Fellow 6th grader K C Finch followed in 4th and five others finished in the top 20 allowing the girls to bring home the 1st place team trophy!
