Welcome, Coach Kelsey!

Coach Mark Tebbs will be starting a new journey next year as he steps away from a 30-year teaching and coaching career here at Westminster.  We are so very grateful for his loyalty and faithfulness over the years as he has amassed over 500 wins, but more importantly impacted hundreds of young men for the Lord.  We will honor Coach Tebbs further sometime in the future, but in the meantime we would like to introduce  our new varsity boys’ basketball coach, Coach Kelsey.

Kevin Kelsey has been coaching varsity boys’ basketball for twenty-four years in Los Angeles, California, eighteen of which he served as head coach. During that time, fourteen of his teams have finished their respective seasons ranked in the top sixteen of their division (in a 60-team conference), making him one of only a few coaches in Southern California to accomplish this high rate of success. He runs an exciting fast-paced offense that allows his players a sense of freedom and confidence while his approach to defense rests on player communication and unity. Although he loves to win, he finds greater satisfaction in the life-long relationships he builds with his players. Coach Kelsey stated recently, “I see joining the Wildcats as an incredible opportunity, the weight of which is not lost on me. To take over a stellar program from a legend like Coach Tebbs is intimidating, but I am looking forward to the challenge of continuing his legacy with these young men.” A Chattanooga native and a UT Vol, he is excited to move back to the South with his wife, three children, dogs, cats, and the family snake. Coach Kelsey is drawn to this verse form Deuteronomy 31:6 – “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you.”

We are excited to welcome Coach Kelsey to the Westminster family as he and his wife will also be part of our full-time teaching faculty at Westminster.  They hope to move in early July and he is excited about getting started with the team during the summer.  We will give the basketball team further details soon about a zoom meeting with Coach Kelsey and how our assistant coaches will be a part of summer workouts and next season.
