This past February Lower, Middle, and Upper School all celebrated Black History month by incorporating African American culture in all aspects of learning.

At Westminster Schools of Augusta, we believe that everyone is created in God's image. With this in mind, year-round we seek to celebrate and educate our students on all cultures and backgrounds. This past February Lower, Middle, and Upper School all celebrated Black History month by incorporating African American culture in all aspects of learning.
Here is a look at how our students in the Middle School division celebrated Black History Month in their daily classes and in a division-wide project:
Middle School Project
- Students were challenged to create a video, write a song or create visual art that reflected black history month
- Video Winner: Benjamin Malzer
- Music/Poetry Winner: Ella Reyn Duckworth
- Art Winners: Sydney Booker and Ellyn Baggs
English
- Read Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry and To Kill a Mockingbird
- Studied poetry of African American poets and they were challenged to write an essay on Balck History Month
- Corey Rogers from Laney Museum came to speak on the history of Black History Month
Math
- Learned about Katherine Johnson's contribution to mathematics
History
- Worked in groups to create a slide presentation highlighting African Americans in the areas of science, politics, religion, and military
- Looked at the contributions of African American soldiers in World War I
Chorus
- "Africa to Bebop" - Students charted the development of music genres in America since the arrival of African Americans
Band
- Traced the roots of jazz and blues music from Louis Armstrong Park, New Orleans back to Africa
Computer
- Created one-minute movies about George Washington Carver's influence on technology
Science
- "Scientist Spotlight" highlighted influential African American scientists and how they overcame adversity every Friday
