The Upper School foreign language department offers four years of Spanish (including an AP course), starting in 8th or 9th grade. Five years of Latin (including two AP courses) are offered, starting in grade 8th or 9th grade. Also, five years of French are offered, starting in 8th or 9th grade.
Latin 1, French 1, and Spanish 1 are 9th grade level courses offered to those 8th grade students who meet the qualifications developed by Westminster’s Upper School foreign language department. In order to qualify for either of these courses, a student must attain a yearly average of 85 or above in each of his or her full year 7th grade courses. Grades will be audited in June to determine qualification. Because these courses are designed for 9th graders, placement of 8th graders into either course may be limited due to class size. Priority is given to 8th graders with the highest yearly averages, and after all of the 9th grade students have been placed.
