History of Westminster Schools of Augusta

1972: Westminster is founded by area businessmen and First Presbyterian Church. The school enrolls 178 students in grades 1-8. Classes are held at National Hills Baptist Church.

1973: Kindergarten classes are added and housed at Lakemont Prebyterian Church.

1974: Westminster purchases a 25-acre campus on Wheeler Road. Construction is begun.

1975: Elementary and high school buildings are occupied. Construction on the soccer field is begun.

1976: Administration/preschool building is occupied. The library and lunchroom are located in this building.

1977: Westminster graduates its first senior class of 6 students.

1979: Fourth grade classrooms added.

1980: A full-size gymnasium is erected. Westminster Day school is restructured to become Westminster Day School (PreK-6th grades) and Westminster Preparatory School (7th-12th grades).

1981: The elementary playground is equipped.

1983: A computer department is begun. The cafeteria and four classrooms are added to the gymnasium.

1986: Additional classrooms are added.

1987: Art and band programs are started. Four auxillary classrooms are added.

1988: Advanced Placement (AP) classes are added. The first graduation of Westminster Preparatory School is held.

1989: Initial S.A.C.S. accreditation is received. The Media Center is completed.

1991: A science lab and four more classrooms are added. The soccer stadium is completed.

1992: WPS graduates the largest senior class (32 local plus two foreign exchange students). "Annie" is presentedby the drama department. Westminster holds a 20th birthday celebration.
