Day School
Library/Media Services
The school library/media center is an integral part of the curricular
program at Westminster Day School. The primary objective of the media
center is to expose students to books at an early age and instill a
life-long love of reading.
Students in
Pre-K through fifth grades have scheduled library classes once a week where
they are taught library skills, listening skills, the parts of a book, the
Dewey Decimal System, how to use the library and card catalogue, and
research skills appropriate to their grade level. Guest readers read to the
students in Pre-K through second grades during library time, and students in
3rd grade have a library reader once a month. Students in K through fifth
grades also check out books.
Our collection
holds periodicals, more than 7,000 books, and our online research and
reference database, Galileo, contains over 150 searchable databases that
support student research. Students can access Galileo from home or school
at any time.
Computer
classes are offered for students in first through fifth grades. Students in
first through third grades learn Microsoft Word, including how to use
AutoShapes, Clip Art, Word Art and skills such as building a timeline.
Students in 4th grade learn PowerPoint, Publisher, and Microsoft Word.
Students in fifth grade learn PowerPoint, Excel and Movie Maker.
Keyboarding computer classes are offered to students in third through fifth
grade. These students attend computer classes each week and work on
projects relating to their curriculum assigned by the classroom teacher or
media specialist.
Students in
second grade are offered basic computer skills classes to include Paint,
WordArt, and skills such as drawing objects/pictures. Computer studies
focus on the use of a variety of software and hardware, research skills, and
electronic presentation skills. At Westminster, technology is being
integrated curriculum-wide.
Students in
1st-3rd grades are required to take Accelerated Reader quizzes on the
computer. The Accelerated Reader quizzes make reading practices more
effective and build a culture of reading throughout the school.
